Sisters Anne Hart Gilbert and Elizabeth Hart Thwaites founded the Distressed Females' Friend Society of St. John's in 1815. One year later, they founded the affiliated Female Refuge Society of East Harbour. These social aid organizations provided support to free and enslaved Black women and girls living in destitute conditions in early 19th-century Antigua.
